Rhode Island Red
General Description: Large
(3.6Kg-3.9Kg) Bantam
(400g-600g)
Developed in America and admitted to the Standard
in 1904, this bird was used in the 1950’s as the basis for the modern battery
hen. They should lay in excess of 260 eggs a year, but although they can be used
for meat the yellowish skin is not particularly favoured. When crossed with
Light Sussex they become auto-sexing, so that at one day old the female chicks
are gold and the male chicks are silver. Generally the exhibition birds are much
darker than utility birds and appear more black than red.
Main Colours:
Deep Chocolate Red
