| Marans
General Description: Large
(2.7Kg-3.6Kg)
Bantam
(680g - 910g)
This bird was bred from many other breeds and takes its name from the French
town of Marans. It was introduced to the UK in 1929 as a dual purpose bird. As
with other barred breeds the hens can be bred with suitable unbarred males,
producing sex linked chicks with the males being much paler than female chicks.
One of the reasons this breed is so popular is the very deep brown colouring of
the eggs. They are very attractive but there is no truth in the suggestion that
brown eggs are any better for you than white or cream ones.
Main Colours:
Black, Dark Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo and Silver Cuckoo
